Session 33: The War Has Started
đď¸ Session Recording
đ Session Overview
Dawn crept into the forest between Wyrmhollow Reach and Vysteerie like a cold leak of light. The party woke scraped, exhausted, and worseâSorina and Xercomath now visibly marked by Arcane Wasting as the infection spread through them in ugly, undeniable ways. Before anyone could even settle into a plan, Broj began speaking strangely: fractured questions, wrong-word riddles, and sudden pauses as his eyes flashed gold, then returned.
When the party finally pressed for answers, the Dream Entity answered through Brojâwatching through his eyes, learning, and trying to translate itself into their world. It spoke as if language were music: "tone" and "harmony" instead of meaning, calling the mind the "skull-cave," memory a "place of not visited," speech a "mouth-melody," and understanding a "meaning-melody." The entity's presence felt less like guidance and more like observationâcurious, alien, and unsettlingly close.
With no time to linger, they pushed toward Vysteerie under Xavril's guidance. TyelKoron reached out to Myrium as an anchor, and she told them to meet at the next platform. The bramble forest punished every step; worse, it reacted to magicâfaint glowing in vine and thorn as if spells painted targets on their backs. At a ravine, the only crossing was a fallen tree choked in brambles. Xavril nearly fell clearing a path, and Egg saved himâtwiceâthough Xavril lost his sword into the depths. Egg offered his own blade without hesitation. From the struggle they learned the brambles weren't just plants: they behaved like spiderwebs for hushstalkers, a living alarm system waiting for the wrong vibration.
The terrain thinned into rocky, sparse woodland as they reached the platform. Myrium arrived and stunned everyone by kissing Xavril on greeting, then immediately set about moving them. Xavril, increasingly shaken and aware something was wrongâmaybe with the group, maybe with his own mindâwas taken with TyelKoron and Egg as they realmstrided. During the stride, Egg was hit with a horrid vision of screaming tied to Xavril's presence, like a mind brushing the party with something sharp.
They landed in Tarkir.
Myrium moved quickly, giving them barely a minute to follow before she'd be gone, forcing rapid reattunement to Tarkir's leylines. But Tarkir cracked open something raw in Xercomathâhope, grief, obsession. The chance of finding his son outweighed the party's momentum. Xercomath stayed behind as the others realmstrided back to Myrium's shop in Wyrmhollow Reach, leaving a hollow absence that immediately changed the air in the group.
Warwick reached Xercomath with Sending to confirm he was alive and thinking clearly. Xercomath answered: he was on Tarkir, and he was looking for his son. Warwick offered the party's help. Xercomath didn't take it.
TyelKoron, furious at the detour and desperate to treat Sorina, proposed an aggressive pivot: realmstride to Theros and seek Nymis, the Seedbound God. Nymis would help, but not immediatelyâit would take days. So the party waited. Egg realmstrided back to the Manticore and was greeted by Vyr, then spent his time helping with guard duties and the logistical fallout of the pteranodon losses. On Theros, TyelKoron meditated for two days, and Warwick used the downtime to develop an absorb/refract defensive technique for his magic.
Broj's situation worsened in a different direction. The Dream Entity continued peering through him. Visions came: a golden-eyed female figure like a shifting mirror-self, sometimes in a different backdrop, sometimes more threatening. Broj even shifted in dream-spaceâappearing as a woman at timesâwhile the entity tested identity the same way it tested language. When Broj demanded a name, the entity gave a cryptic hint about "hooks," then denied it, insisting it had no name and answered to none.
On the third day, the air changed. Nymis arrivedâan immense vine-and-wood humanoid avatarâand with it a unicorn and a treant procession. The party knelt and offered calm respect. By then, Xercomath had returned to the Manticore and found Eggâshaken, exhausted, ill, and visibly haunted by whatever he'd seen or learned on Tarkir. Egg brought him to Theros in time. The unicorn touched Sorina with its horn, cleansing Arcane Wasting. It touched Xercomath next and purged the infection from him as well.
But the cure didn't touch the deeper wound.
Xercomath, eyes hollow with dread and grief, reached toward the unicorn as if begging for something beyond healing. TyelKoron tried to steady himâpressed him to breathe, to think, to stay with them. Xercomath snapped. In a sudden eruption of anguish, he lashed out at TyelKoron, then realmstrided away to the Manticore. The party followed soon after, but the damage was done: the group had never seen Xercomath so feral, so stripped of humor and composure.
When pressed, Xercomath gave them only one truth, cold and final:
"I am going to war. With or without you."

đĽ NPCs Encountered
The Dream Entity
Role: Mysterious Observer
Communicated through Broj using cryptic musical metaphors, referring to thoughts as "skull-cave" and speech as "mouth-melody." The entity observed through Broj's eyes, learning about the material world and testing concepts of identity and language.
Myrium
Role: Planeswalker Guide
Arrived at the platform to help the party, greeting Xavril with a surprising kiss before quickly realmstriding them. Her urgency and cryptic movements continue to raise questions.
Xavril
Role: Forest Guide
Guided the party through the bramble forest, nearly falling into a ravine twice while clearing a path. Lost his sword but received Egg's blade. Increasingly aware that something is wrong, either with the group or his own mind. Experienced by Egg as triggering horrid visions during realmstride.
Vyr

đ Important Discoveries
The Brambles as Alarm Systems
The party learned that the magical brambles throughout the forest don't just obstruct passageâthey behave like spiderwebs for hushstalkers. The brambles glow faintly when magic is used nearby, effectively painting targets on spellcasters and creating a living alarm system that alerts the predators to any disturbance.
The Dream Entity's Nature
Through its communication with Broj, the entity revealed it perceives reality fundamentally differentlyâunderstanding language as music and tone rather than direct meaning. It has no name and answers to no "hooks," suggesting it exists outside normal frameworks of identity. The entity appears to be learning about the material plane through direct observation.
Xavril's Disturbing Effect
During realmstride, Egg experienced a horrid vision of screaming directly tied to Xavril's presence, as if something about Xavril brushes against minds in painful ways. This raises serious questions about what Xavril truly is or what may be affecting him.
Broj's Shifting Identity
In dream-space, Broj appears as a woman at times, and the Dream Entity seems to be testing concepts of identity through himâshowing golden-eyed female mirror-selves in different contexts. The boundary between Broj and the entity grows increasingly blurred.
⨠Character Moments
Egg's Selfless Heroism
Egg saved Xavril from falling into the ravine not once but twice, demonstrating quick reflexes and loyalty. When Xavril lost his sword to the depths, Egg immediately offered his own blade without hesitationâa profound gesture of trust and camaraderie.
Xercomath's Impossible Choice
When the party accidentally landed in Tarkir, Xercomath faced a heart-wrenching decision: continue with the party's mission or stay behind to search for his son. He chose to stay, prioritizing hope over safety, grief over strategy. His return to the party days later, shaken and broken, showed the cost of that choice.
TyelKoron's Leadership Under Pressure
Faced with Sorina's worsening condition and Xercomath's absence, TyelKoron made the difficult call to seek Nymis on Theros. When Xercomath returned in anguish and lashed out, TyelKoron tried to steady himâpressing him to breathe, to think, to stay with the party. The attack was a betrayal of that care.
Warwick's Magical Innovation
During the three-day wait on Theros, Warwick used the downtime productively, developing an absorb/refract defensive technique for his magic. He also maintained contact with Xercomath via Sending, offering support and trying to keep the party together.
Broj's Identity Crisis
As the Dream Entity's presence grew stronger, Broj experienced profound shiftsâspeaking in riddles, seeing visions of golden-eyed mirror-selves, and even appearing as a woman in dream-space. When he demanded a name from the entity, it refused, denying the very concept of names and "hooks." Broj is caught between worlds, his identity becoming fluid.
Xercomath's Declaration of War
After being healed of Arcane Wasting but not of his deeper wounds, Xercomath reached a breaking point. When pressed by his companions, he gave them only one truth: "I am going to war. With or without you." It was a moment that shattered the party's unity and revealed the depths of his determinationâand his pain.
đ The Horror in Gloomspire
Epilogue: Xercomath's Descent
Xercomath returns to Tarkir alone, determined to find his son no matter the cost. He knows he's being tracked by a dragon in the skies and goes silent to avoid giving away his position as he descends toward Tarkir's Underdark caverns.
There, he discovers that Gorrath the Malice-Scaledâthe black shadow dragon who killed him and caused him to sparkâhas left his mark everywhere. Runes carved into stone, tunnels widened and hollowed, symbols leading deeper like a trail meant to be followed. The Arcane Wasting sickness spreads through the Underdark like poison.
In Gloomspire, Xercomath finds his home defaced: his likeness etched onto walls, bounties and threats plastered everywhere promising torture and death by dragon to any who aid Xercomath and his kin.
He battles the illness and searches for the old royal escape route. In the hidden chamber, he finds the horror waiting for him:
Vendui, his first lieutenant and closest friend, pinned dead to the wall by a massive shadow dragon scale piercing through the flumph's decayed body.
And inside Vendui's mouth, a final message crafted to break him: his son's eyestalk, left for Xercomath to find.
"Faint echoes of weeping and wailing fill the chamber as Xercomath stands in the dark and realizes the war has already started."
đ DM Notes
Session Highlights: This session marked a critical turning point in the campaign. The Dream Entity's communication through Broj added layers of cosmic horror and mystery, while the bramble forest created genuine environmental tension. The accidental landing in Tarkir created an organic dramatic moment that split the party.
Emotional Peaks: Xercomath's arc dominated the session's emotional landscape. The decision to stay on Tarkir, his return in broken condition, the healing that couldn't touch his grief, and his violent outburst at TyelKoron created a powerful through-line. The epilogue revelationâVendui's death and his son's eyestalkâwas designed to be absolutely devastating.
Mechanical Notes: The bramble mechanics (glowing in response to magic) forced players to think tactically about spell use. The three-day waiting period allowed for meaningful downtime activities. The Arcane Wasting cure via Nymis provided closure to that thread while opening Xercomath's personal quest.
Player Feedback: Strong emotional investment from all players. Xercomath's player delivered an incredibly powerful performance. The Dream Entity's cryptic speech pattern was well-received, though challenging to roleplay.
Future Hooks: Xercomath's war has begun. The party must decide whether to follow him into what may be a suicide mission, or pursue their own goals. The Dream Entity's influence on Broj continues to grow. Xavril's disturbing effect on Egg during realmstride needs investigation. Myrium's kiss and cryptic behavior warrant attention.
đ Looking Ahead
The session ended with Xercomath's chilling declaration: "I am going to war. With or without you." The epilogue revealed the depths of Gorrath's cruelty and Xercomath's grief, leaving the party with an impossible question: Do they follow their friend into what may be certain death, or do they pursue their mission while Xercomath wages his war alone?
Meanwhile, the Dream Entity's presence in Broj grows stronger, Xavril's true nature remains a mystery wrapped in screaming visions, and Arcane Wasting continues to spread across the planes. The party has been pulled in too many directions, and something has to give.
Next session promises: A critical decision point for the party's unity, potential confrontation with Gorrath the Malice-Scaled, deeper exploration of the Dream Entity's motives, and the consequences of choices made in grief and desperation.
